空手を始める前の１０代の頃、私は柔道を習っていました。

ある時、男性の対戦相手がマットの上で私に腕緘（うでがらみ）を仕掛けてきました。

普通はここで、降参の合図として指で２回床をたたきます。

でも私はそうしませんでした。屈服したり諦めたりしたくなかったのです。

その結果、私は腕を骨折。でも、当時はそのことがとても誇らしかったのです。

降参や諦めを拒むこのパターンは、私の人生とキャリアの中で何度も繰り返されました。

このような決意をポジティブに捉える人はたくさんいます。

そして実際にそれが助けになる時もあります。

自分と他人を比べてしまうことはありませんか？

職場の同僚は、いつも自信にあふれ、明快で、落ち着いている。

インスタグラムを見ると、みんな見事な体型を保ち、素敵な人間関係を築いてキラキラした生活を送っている。

２０２２年の調査によると、女性は男性よりも他人と比較する傾向が強いという結果が出ています。女性は、自分よりどこか優れているように見える他人と自分を比べてしまうのです。でも、これは自尊心を傷付けることになってしまいます。

特に、男性優位の職場では、女性が男性の同僚と自分を比較することがよくあります。調査によると、ＩＱに性差はないのに、女性は自分の知性を過小評価する傾向があり、男性は過大評価する傾向にあるようです。

スイスの教育機関が調査した２０２２年版の英語力ランキングによると、非英語圏の１１２ の国と地域のうち、日本は８０位で、前年から２つ順位を下げました。

日本はグローバルビジネスのために英語力を上げなければいけないとメディアで盛んに話題となっています。でも、本当に英語力だけの問題なのでしょうか？

日本のビジネスウーマンが英語のプレゼンを入念に準備すると想像してください。彼女は、重要なポイントを網羅するために原稿と詳細なスライドを用意します。

しかし、彼女はグローバルなクライアントや同僚にプレゼンをするために、正確で洗練された英語を話そうとして言葉を慎重に選び、伝えたい内容を言い忘れないように、文字を詰め込み過ぎたスライドに頼ってしまいます。

彼女は完璧さを目指すほど自意識過剰になります。アイコンタクトが難しくなり、表情がこわばり、手が震え、声も震えて小さくなります。

「プレゼンはすごく緊張する」

一緒に仕事をし始めると、多くのクライアントが、こう言います。そのたびに私は、こう答えます。「いいんですよ。つまり、あなたは普通の人間ということです。」

人間は原始時代から、生き残るために集団の一員である必要がありました。群れから追放されたら、自分で食べ物を見つけにくくなったり、通りすがりの獣に食べられてしまうかもしれません！

そのため、人間はグループに受け入れられることが重要でした。

現在、プレゼンのために人前に立つ時や、オンライン会議で発言をする時でさえ、周囲に受け入れられないかもしれないという無意識の内在する恐怖を抱くのは普通のことです。

この恐怖を感じると、脳内で自然な攻撃・逃避反応が生じます。

他の動物も、恐怖にさらされると、この攻撃・逃避反応を示します。そのおかげで生き残ることができるのです。

例えば、脅威に直面したライオンは反撃するかもしれません。鹿は逃げるかもしれません。

人間も同じです。

私たちは無意識に反撃することがあります。これは身体的な攻撃とは限りません。カッとなって怒ったり、きつく言い返してしまったことはありませんか？

恐怖や動揺を感じる状況から反射的に逃げることもあります。私は同僚の言葉に傷付き、会社のトイレへ駆け込んで泣いたことがあります。

私たちは脅えたり、気が動転したりすると、体の変化を感じます。それは、体が戦ったり逃げたりする準備をしているためなのです。
