Worse, the sacks are tied with ceremonial satin cord instead of reinforced delivery hemp, indicating deliberate substitution and potential sabotage. The boys realize that filing a formal report will take too long before the convoy departs, forcing them to rely on physical evidence. They decide their only recourse is to trace the incorrect satin cord backwards, believing it will lead them to both the missing soldiers and the perpetrator, potentially linking the inventory tampering to the low humming sounds previously investigated near the molasses vents.
