When the sky darkens and thunder rolls in, she leads them to shelter beneath an oak and gently wraps her cherished silk scarf around the child's small shoulders. What follows — after the clouds part and birdsong returns — leaves her kneeling in the wet field, breathless before something beyond all understanding.
