Thank You, Five

The Scarlet Pimpernel - Act 1 (All Versions?) w/ Christine Caccipuoti from Footnoting History

Listen Later

We're talking about the musical about the French Revolution!!! Wait, no, we didn't already do that because Les Mis doesn't take place during the French Revolution! It's Frank Wildhorn's The Scarlet Pimpernel, the musical with almost as many versions as Chess. Based on a novel (and a play and a series of books and a series of movies and ...) by Baroness Orczy at the turn of the century, it had a number of openings, closing, rewrites, and attempts at Tony awards. Percy Blakeney marries the beautiful French woman Margaueritte only to find she's been instrumental in turning in nobility to the executioners. So, he takes on a disguise to help people escape France, chased by the relentless Chauvelin. Find out what happens in the episode!
