Imagine watching a football game where the quarterback suddenly turns around and tackles his own running back. You would scream at the TV, "What are you doing? You’re on the same team!" It sounds ridiculous, but in relationships, we do the exact same thing, all the time. When stress hits, or finances get tight, or a disagreement arises, we instinctively turn around and treat our spouse as the opponent. We try to win the argument, forgetting that if we defeat our partner, we both lose the game.
