The Seven Churches (11): Philadelphia, Rewarded by the Lord
Among the seven churches in Revelation 2-3, Philadelphia is the one that fulfills the Lord’s desire. This church signifies the recovery of the genuine New Testament church life, which began in the 1800s with the Plymouth Brethren and John Nelson Darby, and continued in the 20th century with the local churches raised up through the ministries of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee.
To this church alone the Lord gives the promise of the pre-tribulation rapture (Rev. 3:10; cf. Luke 21:36). But, He also exhorts her to “hold fast what you have, that no one take your crown” (Rev. 3:11); so many of us in the local churches today surely need to heed this word!
And to the overcomers in this church, the Lord speaks of how He will write upon them, not only the name of His God and His own new name, but also, the name of the New Jerusalem (Rev. 3:12). This is because, wherever you have the reality of the church in Philadelphia, there you have, even today, in the midst of this dark age, a foretaste of that heavenly city as the eternal dwelling place of God and man.
