"Soul Conversations" with Don Ajené

The Shadows

Listen Later

Every practice has its shadow.

In this episode, I explore the distortions that often disguise themselves as spiritual strength; the ways we confuse maturity with image, and service with avoidance.

I’ve come to see that Soul Courageousness is not just about embodying light; it’s also about having the courage to face what hides beneath it.

Together, we’ll look at five shadow versions that weaken our authenticity:

  • Spiritual Bypassing — when peace becomes repression.

  • Performative Courage — when bravery becomes a show.

  • Self-Reliant Isolation — when independence turns brittle.

  • Fearlessness That Denies Reality — when numbness masquerades as strength.

  • Martyrdom That Depletes — when giving becomes self-erasure.

I draw from Jung, Frankl, Alan Watts, Emotional Intelligence, and the Spiritual Emotional Intelligence (SEQ) frameworks to examine how shadow becomes our teacher when we stop running from it.

As Alan Watts once said:

“No valid plans for the future can be made by those who have no capacity for living now.”

That, to me, is the essence of Soul Courageousness. Learning to live now, with the whole of who we are: afraid, human, and still choosing alignment over avoidance.
