A young resident of the isolated town of Door Veil, where every person receives a mysterious Box on their 18th birthday that assigns them an irreversible Role for life. Some roles are harmless. Others are feared. The narrator receives the most dreaded one of all: Shepherd—a forgotten position no one speaks about.
To understand the task, the narrator is forced to seek out the town’s previous Shepherd, an older, broken recluse who reveals the horrifying truth. The Shepherd’s duty is to protect the town’s Boundary by hunting and destroying Husks—the corrupted, lingering bodies of the dead that refuse to pass on. These exorcisms must be carried out in secret, even when the Husk still wears the face of someone the Shepherd once knew.
When the narrator attempts to escape the town, reality itself bends to stop them, proving the Role is inescapable. With the old Shepherd’s death, the responsibility fully transfers. The story ends with the new Shepherd standing alone at the edge of civilization, watching dark figures gather beyond the Boundary—now fully bound to a lonely lifetime of guardianship, violence, and silence.
