AI governance in healthcare has to start with emotional readiness, not a compliance template — Susie Branagan on human-centered AI governance and just culture.
AI governance in healthcare cannot start with a compliance template. It has to start with emotional readiness, which Susie Branagan, a trauma-informed nurse executive and AI ethics advocate, argues is what most organizations are missing. Her core claim is that organizations cannot be technologically ready if they are not emotionally ready first, and leaders who skip that step will watch their AI initiatives fail regardless of how sophisticated the technology is.
Governance that begins with compliance rather than human impact will always be reactive. Transparency requires ongoing communication with patients, clinicians, and administrators, not a published policy document.
Just culture is infrastructure for AI adoption. Staff who operate in blame cultures will not report the model failures they see, which means leadership flies blind on the one signal that matters most.
Emotional intelligence is a governance competency. Leaders who cannot read the emotional state of their staff cannot tell the difference between resistance that is legitimate and resistance that is fear. Both require a different response.

Healthcare AI security risks demand attention before deployment — Anitha Mareedu on cybersecurity leadership challenges and AI governance in healthcare.
AI security risks in healthcare demand attention before deployment, not after. Anitha Mareedu, a network security engineer with experience spanning advertising, social media, security vendors, and chip design at Cadence, argues that deploying AI without securing it is deploying a vulnerability. The conversation, recorded at the Put Data First Conference, maps what healthcare leaders must understand about the threat landscape that arrives with every AI deployment.
AI security is not a feature added after deployment. It is a prerequisite. Every AI system introduced into healthcare expands the attack surface in ways traditional frameworks were not designed to address.
Different industries prioritize the CIA triad differently. Government agencies prioritize confidentiality. B2B organizations prioritize availability. Healthcare must protect personally identifiable information while maintaining uptime, which creates tradeoffs that security teams must decide explicitly.
Continuous self-directed learning is now the only way to keep pace. Technology now changes every year rather than every 5 or 10, and cybersecurity professionals who wait for formal training will fall behind the threat landscape.

Responsible AI in healthcare starts with context — Keshavan Seshadri on AI explainability, algorithmic bias, and human-in-the-loop design for healthcare AI.
Responsible AI in healthcare starts with one question: what context does the model actually have? Keshavan Seshadri, Senior ML Engineer at Prudential Financial and an architect of generative AI platforms and agentic frameworks, argues that without deep context, intelligence is neither authentic nor safe. The conversation, recorded at the Put Data First Conference, lays out what explainability, bias detection, and human-in-the-loop design look like when built correctly from the start.
Context is not optional; it is the foundation. A healthcare AI system without patient, task, operational, and institutional context is not intelligent. It is a pattern matcher operating outside its training distribution.
The cost of errors is not symmetric in clinical settings. Telling a patient they have cancer when they do not triggers additional tests. Telling a patient they do not have cancer when they do is catastrophic. Models must be calibrated to that asymmetry.
Bias detection is a continuous practice, not a launch audit. Organizations that treat bias as a one-time check will continue shipping models that drift the moment their training data becomes stale.
00:00 Authentic intelligence and context awareness 00:45 Live from Data First Conference (Las Vegas) 02:20 What authentic intelligence means in practice 03:30 Four types of context in healthcare AI 06:25 Training, fine-tuning, and context engineering 08:15 Specialty workflows and domain-specific models 09:50 Why AI is not a doctor (yet) 12:00 Confidence scores, risk, and human deferral 15:05 Bias, explainability, and transparency requirements 18:00 Logging, tool tracing, and auditability 20:10 Technically correct but contextually wrong examples 24:20 What builders should focus on now 26:20 Guardrails, evals, and regulated environments 27:10 How to reach Keshavon

He writes and speaks on authentic intelligence, the role of context in ML design, and the gap between what current models can do and what healthcare demands.

AI in healthcare cannot replace language access — Carol Velandia on communication equity, patient safety, and the limits of AI strategy for healthcare.
AI in healthcare cannot replace language access, and treating it like it can puts patients at risk. Carol Velandia, Founder of Equal Access Language Services, has built her career around eliminating language-based discrimination in clinical settings. Her core argument is direct: you cannot outsource ethics to AI, and the companies that win will combine AI speed with human-in-the-loop precision.
Language access is infrastructure, not a service line item. Declaring English the standard in a clinical setting is, in Carol's metaphor, like declaring staircases the standard. There is nothing wrong with staircases unless you use a wheelchair.
Machine translation accelerates speed, not accuracy. A word with specific clinical meaning in one language may not translate precisely into another. Human post-editing is what keeps translation safe in diagnosis and treatment planning.
Ethics cannot be outsourced to AI. Reducing language access to a cost-reduction problem rations care based on budget rather than patient need, which is the opposite of the equity healthcare leaders claim to protect.
00:00 Language access as ramps vs staircases 00:45 Why this matters in an AI era 03:10 Trust, readiness, and frontline communication 05:10 Communication is the most powerful diagnostic tool 08:20 Civil rights, policy risk, and meaningful access 12:10 AI won’t replace ethics, empathy, or rapport 15:00 Human-in-the-loop translation and post-editing 17:40 Artificial intelligence is not moral intelligence 21:45 Inclusion as infrastructure, not an afterthought 24:10 Making language access visible as patient safety 26:20 “Language access is the bridge between compliance and compassion” 27:55 How to reach Carol and learn more
Carol Velandia is the Founder of Equal Access Language Services. She trains healthcare providers on communication equity, Section 1557 compliance, and the cultural frameworks that determine whether a patient can safely describe their symptoms. Her work sits at the intersection of patient safety, equity, and responsible AI deployment.

AI strategy for healthcare is a data quality strategy first — Danette McGilvray on the rising cost of ignoring data governance in healthcare AI.
AI strategy for healthcare is a data quality strategy first. Danette McGilvray, President of Granite Falls Consulting and author of Executing Data Quality Projects: Ten Steps to Quality Data and Trusted Information, has spent more than 30 years explaining why the data powering AI is the reason the technology exists at all. Her framing is direct: organizations will spend tens of millions on technology and refuse to spend hundreds of thousands on the data that makes it work.
Generative AI does not fix bad data; it amplifies it. Outputs appear sophisticated and authoritative while remaining fundamentally unreliable. This creates a false sense of trust that hides underlying quality problems.
Data quality is a strategic investment, not a cleanup project. Organizations that succeed invest in data governance long before they invest in machine learning, treating data quality as foundational rather than preparatory.
Ethics starts in the metadata. Governance is about enabling people to use data responsibly, not controlling access. Doing things right the first time only feels like slowing down while actually saving money and accelerating results.
Danette McGilvray is President of Granite Falls Consulting and author of Executing Data Quality Projects: Ten Steps to Quality Data and Trusted Information, now in its second edition with translations in Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish underway. She has spent more than 30 years helping organizations treat data as a strategic asset rather than a technical afterthought.

AI strategy for healthcare cannot be copy-pasted from other industries — Ritu Chakrawarty on AI readiness, product adoption, and AI literacy for healthcare leaders.
AI strategy for healthcare cannot be copy-pasted from another industry. Ritu Chakrawarty, an analytics and AI product leader with nearly 2 decades across analytics, consulting, startups, and enterprise AI strategy, argues that the reason most healthcare AI projects stall is not model quality but adoption design. Recorded at the Put Data First Conference in Las Vegas, this conversation lays out a practical adoption-first framework for healthcare leaders who are tired of pilots that never scale.
AI adoption is a product problem, not a model problem. Most healthcare AI initiatives fail at the adoption layer. The technology works; the humans around it are not ready to change their workflows.
"Should or could" is the most underused question in AI strategy. Leaders regularly greenlight AI for problems that could be solved with a form, a rule, or a spreadsheet. The real cost of AI is not the model; it is the organizational debt of maintaining it.
A purely technical AI advisor creates a bias toward technical solutions. The best AI strategists are generalists who have delivered business outcomes across multiple parts of the organization and bring strong technology understanding to the conversation.
Ritu Chakrawarty is a data and analytics executive with nearly 2 decades of experience spanning analytics, consulting, startups, and enterprise AI product strategy. She advises leaders on how to move AI from pilot to adoption and frames AI literacy as an organizational capability rather than a training program.
