Tense, fast paced, intelligent legal thriller
David Baldacci never fails to deliver and this tense, fast-moving, intelligent legal thriller is no exception to the rule. Rufus Harms has already served 25 years of his life-term sentence for the brutal murder of a young child, an event of which he has only hazy memories. A letter from the army, and other emerging fragments of evidence, trigger something in his mind and help him to piece together the simple truth about what happened and set him on a quest to clear his name.
Although Rufus knows that the action will endanger his life with the help of his lawyer he smuggles out an appeal to be filed the appeal at the Supreme Court. It reveals a massive miscarriage of justice and names highly placed individuals in a conspiracy that threatens to blow the justice system and the Supreme Court wide open. Shortly after Harms' lawyer and the Supreme Court clerk, Michael Fiske, who received the documents are murdered. It falls on the shoulders of the clerks love interest, Sara Evans and his brother, an ex-cop and defense lawyer, John Fiske to uncover the truth, but there are those who will stop at nothing to cover up their part in the scandal.
In addition to the action packed story of corruption, blackmail and bribery, David Baldacci gives an in-depth description of the priorities, practices and politics of the Supreme Court system, an institution I have never really understood. I loved this book with all its twists and turns, and would thoroughly recommend it to everyone.
Definitely one to read/listen
Great plots with enough twists to keep you guessing. Great narration and David Baldacci at his best
