We communicate spiritual principles to each other using words and ideas that our minds can put into a form that they can understand. We naturally experience something of the principles being communicated because there exists within us a corresponding reflection of these higher ideas. And we innately know the validity of what we are hearing or reading because of this inner resonance.

Although verbal communication of true spiritual ideas is absolutely necessary, we do not need any words or ideas when it comes to direct perception. In fact, in many instances the mental extrapolation of an interior experience dilutes the quality of it.

In any given moment, it is always enough to be aware of the unnaturalness of an internal state that has appeared in the absence of our attention. We have the potential to instantly come awake to the onset of any negative state that wants to take root within us. Our task is the gradual recognition of our attachment to these familiar, unnatural patterns of thoughts and feelings that are in conflict with the natural flow of life. The more we can detect the presence of unnecessary negative states, the more we will recognize where we are interfering with our own potential to have a bright and true relationship with real life.
