This episode of the SitRoom features a discussion on "Woke America" with Scholar James Lindsay and Bill of Rights Institute President David Bobb.
James Lindsay, author of the viral essay The Cult Dynamics of Wokeness (link below) and co-founder of New Discourses.
--- James — widely cited for his analyses of “woke culture,” contemporary academia, and his exposure (link below) of the politicization of academic journals — suggested the “Woke Movement” possesses the same three steps of cult dynamics: initiation, reprogramming, and control.
Cults, like “wokism,” work by generating or exploiting vulnerability and guilt, then offer the ideology as an emotional antidote to these feelings.
--- How do we counter it? James advised exposing the hypocrisy, then trying to diffuse the situation by posing a question such as: “Is this rhetoric the best way to bring our office/community together?”
--- In addition to his own forthcoming, and already bestselling, work (link below), James also recommended reading Douglas Stone’s Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most.
Dr. David Bobb, President of the Bill of Rights Institute and architect of Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness: A history of the American Experiment.
--- David spoke to the nefarious impact of The 1619 Project and his organization’s competing vision for educating the next generation on American History.
--- The NYT Project aims to establish 1619 — the year the transatlantic slave trade began — as the founding of the United States, but David argued that this interpretation of history is more about the cultural and political reality of the nation today, rather than the political situation at the founding.
Unfortunately, David believes “we are entering an era of escalation, where we are getting ‘conservative’ and ‘progressive’ versions of history, which is obviously not how history actually occurred.”
--- How do we break the trend? David’s call to action: use resources such as bri.org better to teach the founding and narratives like American Portraits to teach kids the story of America through the personable lens of brave individuals.
