A narrator who accepts a high-paying, three-day assignment from a man named Raymond: to keep his ailing mother, Marjorie, awake for exactly 72 hours, as her "neurological condition" requires she never sleep. Upon arrival at the sealed house, the narrator discovers that Marjorie is actually battling a supernatural entity that manifests through sleep and shadow, a force that has haunted her family for generations. As the sleep deprivation takes its toll on both Marjorie and the narrator, the entity grows stronger and eventually takes over her body, attacking the caretaker. The narrator manages to contact Raymond, who suddenly appears and reveals the true purpose of the assignment: it was a covert operation to expose and weaken the creature, using the narrator as bait so that Raymond could destroy it with a mysterious weapon. After the entity is eliminated, Raymond pays the narrator the full $5,000 promised, confirming the assignment’s true, horrifying nature.
