The Slow Changing Status Quo of 7 Billion People

Listen Later

We need to recognize the stories we are being told to manipulate our emotions and beliefs by the media are seldom representative of the status quo of the seven billion people on this planet.  For example, most of us will not feel a difference in our lives from climate change.  An unlucky few will experience dire but slow changes in their existence.  For example, their island will go underwater over a few decades.  A few will actually benefit from climate change; for example, the Russian wheat belt is expected to greatly expand because of climate change.  But, for most of us, the status quo of our existence will not be measurably changed by climate change, and when it changes, it will occur imperceptibly over decades.

News is being used to manipulate our emotions more often than it is being used to inform us.  The stories told are not designed to give us a balanced view of reality but instead to push us toward the teller's biased point of view.  Perhaps, we can be more at peace if we can see we are being manipulated by biased people telling stories about one point of view which is not representative of the status quo most of us experience in our lives in between the tragedies we all experience from time to time.
