The Sommpour — D3 Audible Cheat Sheets (21B)

Listen Later

This episode focuses on why California is able to produce such a wide range of wine styles, quality levels, and price points, rather than treating the state as a single homogeneous region. It links California’s cold Pacific influence, mountain barriers, fog, diurnal range, altitude and water availability directly to grape ripening patterns, acidity retention, alcohol levels and flavor development, showing how site selection and vineyard management drive style.

For exam purposes, pay particular attention to the cause-and-effect chains around coastal cooling versus inland heat, the role of fog and afternoon air movement, irrigation and drought pressure, and how vineyard practices such as hang time, green harvesting and replanting after phylloxera influence concentration, balance and alcohol. The discussion of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel illustrates how winemaking choices interact with climate to create different styles, from high-volume, early-drinking wines to premium and super-premium examples.

In the D3 exam, California is frequently used to test your ability to explain variation within a single region. Marks are awarded not for listing facts, but for clearly explaining how environment, viticulture, winemaking and business structures combine to explain California’s stylistic diversity, quality spectrum and pricing.
