The Sommpour — D3 Audible Cheat Sheets (28A)

Listen Later

This episode builds South Africa from first principles: geography, climate and history first, then how those forces shape viticulture, winemaking choices and ultimately price and quality outcomes. Every section is deliberately cause-driven — Benguela Current to cooling to varietal success; KWV control to high-yield plantings to brandy-led production; post-1994 liberalization to export focus and premium ambition. When revising, listen for the contrasts: bulk versus premium Chenin Blanc, traditional versus modern Pinotage, irrigated high-yield vineyards versus old, dry-farmed vines. These contrasts are where examiners reward marks, because they show you understand why South Africa can produce both inexpensive volume wines and outstanding, age-worthy examples within the same framework.
