The Sommpour — D3 Audible Cheat Sheets (30B)

Listen Later

This episode takes the North Island region-by-region and keeps the intent sharp: every place name is treated as a set of examinable levers that explain style, quality and price. Greater Auckland is framed as a modern “HQ versus vineyard” story, where a moderate maritime, often humid climate pushes fungal-disease risk and costs, while rising land values and urbanization shift production elsewhere and leave only small, high-value pockets. Waiheke Island is unpacked as the clearest premium mechanism: slightly warmer conditions and a low diurnal range from surrounding water allow mid- to late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah to fully ripen, sheltered sites mitigate onshore winds, and the combined pressures of rising land prices plus island transport costs hardwire premium pricing for wines that can reach outstanding quality.

Gisborne is used to show how economics can reshape a region just as much as climate. Hawke’s Bay is presented as New Zealand’s Bordeaux logic done in local conditions, anchored by the textbook’s 2,180 sunshine hours and 1,000 mm rainfall, gravelly alluvial soils compared to the Médoc, and the way those factors support Merlot-dominant blends. Wairarapa closes the episode as the North Island’s premium, low-yield model, with the textbook’s two-and-a-half per cent of vineyard area but only one per cent of volume used as the cleanest indicator of low yields and concentration.

Overall, this episode is designed for exam prep: every anchor retained, every regional detail is turned into a cause-and-effect chain, and every chain is tied back to the three payoffs WSET markers reward—style, quality and price—without drifting beyond the prescribed text.
