Louise Steinman has published essays and articles in the Los Angeles Times Magazine, The Washington Post, and Salon. She has also led writing workshops and curates literacy programs. The Souvenir, a powerful, best-selling book, was a featured selection of the Literary Guild, Doubleday Book Club, and others.
Growing up, Louise Steinman never understood the private hell that tormented her father. Years later, among her late parents belongings, she discovers a metal ammo box. In it are almost 500 letters written by her father to her mother during World War II. It also contains a silk Japanese flag inscribed to Yoshio Shimizu. When she reads the letters, Steinman begins to see what her father experienced in the endless days of combat. She also embarks on a decade-long search to find out who Shimizu was-a search which culminates in a trip to Japan to return his flag. The result is a powerful story of discovery, connection, and reconciliation. Weaving together her fathers letters, historical details and the political propaganda of both sides, Steinman creates a narrative that is a unique examination of the personal and universal costs of war.

The Souvenir: A Daughter Discovers Her Father's War
This book was hard to find. I had decided to bring it to Europe for my English reading friends. It is a very moving true story of a woman who found letters from her father to her mother during WWII. She also found a flag her father sent home as a souvenir(and immediately regretted doing so). The flag belonged to a deceased Japanese soldier and was signed by many people from his village. The author decides to return the flag to his family.
Five Stars
Very informative and heartwarming
Fascinating
This was a fascinating journey of a daughter's mission to find the owner of a souvenir flag her father aquired in the second World War. The feelings and the emotions are raw and true. I feel the author did extensive research and ultimately wrote a book about this war that reads honestly and openly.
With all the rave reviews..
You see all the reviews having 5 stars out of 5 stars--I couldn't bring myself to agree. This book starts being really quite good--it drew me in--but then it started to dddddddrrrrrraaaaaaaaggggggggg. I put it down for a while and tried again (I did this 3 times) when I decided to give it up for good. I think it could have been better. :(

I always feel bad giving less than three stars for a review. Honestly, though, I just could not get into this book. The letters from the authors father were great. Talking about war veterans was also very interesting. I had three uncles in World War II and they barely said a word about it. Until he died I didn't know my godfather was a bombardier over Germany. I think this book could really help out some veterans. Something seemed to be missing though, something to hold the whole book together and I couldn't find it.
