The Sower and the Seed
This Parable has a specific application to the teaching of Jesus, as illustrated in Luke chapter 8 verses 4-10. Luke raises the question of why there were such varied reactions to the miracles and the message. How can the same events witnessed by everyone in the crowd affect people so differently? In the Parable, these questions were addressed directly. Four different conditions are described in the Parable.
The sower was sowing seed;
but some fell beside the way, and it was trampled under foot, and the birds of the air ate it up.
Some seeds fell on rocky soil and dried as soon as they sprouted, since there was no moisture.
Similarly, the other seed fell among thorns, which grew with and choked it up.
In contrast, the other seed fell into the right soil, grew up, and produced a crop 100 times greater than the one in the wrong soil.
During the parable, Jesus would say, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear. Some have called this parable a Parable of the Soils. This parable contains three parts: The parable itself, verses 4-8 in Luke chapter 8; the disciples ask Jesus for an explanation of the teaching in parables, verses 9-10 in Luke chapter 8; and the conclusion of the parable in verses 12-13 in Luke chapter 8. As we study The Sower and the Seed, we will discover what Jesus was trying to teach the disciples.
