The Square Cubes

Listen Later

In Jewish tradition, the tablets of the Law (Ten Commandments) given to Moses are described not as rounded, grey stones, but as massive, translucent cubes of blue sapphire. This legendary concept stems from esoteric interpretations of Exodus and the Talmud. [1, 2, 3, 4]

The Rabbinic & Kabbalistic Legend

According to ancient Jewish sages and the Talmud, the original stone tablets chiseled by God were made entirely of sapphire. [1, 2]

Key details of the tradition:

  • The Shape & Size: Instead of the classic rectangular, arched-top monoliths often depicted in art, tradition holds the tablets were perfectly square cubes. When placed together, they formed a perfect cube measuring 1 cubit by 1 cubit by 1 cubit. [1, 2]
  • The Material: Rabbinic teachings suggest the sapphire was taken from God’s heavenly throne. This served as a visual reminder of God's dwelling place and mirrored the "pavement of sapphire" Moses and the elders saw beneath God's feet on Mount Sinai (Exodus 24:10). [1, 2, 3]
  • Miraculous Writing: The Ten Commandments were engraved all the way through the thick stone. The letters were miraculously visible from both sides, and the centers of enclosed letters (like the Hebrew final-mem and samech) were miraculously suspended in mid-air without falling out. [1]
