The Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation has recently shared their Annual Performance Report for the 2023/24 financial year. The Department were in Parliament last week to present their findings and outlined that 95% of their targets. The report lays out the state of monitoring and unpacks the visits they have made to special economic zones, schools and hospitals. This also includes monitoring progress on the implementation of District Development Model as well as collaboration with other public stakeholders. The report also reflects what has been achieved through monitoring and evaluation in government over the past 30 years.
One of the key areas outlined in the report speaks to their role during growing number of natural disasters and how it has worked alongside provinces to rebuild communities. Another aspect of the performance report unpacks what challenges they have faced when monitoring progress such as frontline monitoring, building communication platforms for citizen interaction and information gathering. Given the shift between the 6th and 7th administration, we wanted to understand whether the new GNU has prompted the Department to adapt monitoring efforts and how it will hold fellow departments accountable for the targets they set while also ensure service delivery in the medium-term.
