Summer 2007. Luna is driving a back road through the Oregon Coast Range when she stops at Dry Creek Bridge to check her map. An old woman in a blue dress is standing at the railing, mending a tear in the air itself with a silver needle and black thread. The woman speaks without turning around, and the words she says make the temperature drop. Luna watches her mend the same tear three times, each time the thread coming away stained with something that isn't water. When the woman finally turns, her face is smooth as a porcelain doll, but her eyes are the color of the creek after a landslide. She says one thing that Luna has never been able to forget.
