In the summer of 2017, Luna stopped at the Quartz Creek General Store in the eastern Sierra Nevada. The storekeeper, an old man named Harlan, told her about a black stone he kept in a drawer behind the counter. He said it had been found by his grandfather in the creekbed after a drought. Every person who touched it, he claimed, left a piece of themselves behind. Luna didn't believe him until she held it herself. Now she can still feel the cold weight in her palm, and she hasn't touched another person since. This is a story about a thing that takes and never gives back — about the price of knowing.
