Storytelling is a huge part of the human existence. Our abilities as humans to use our minds to create imaginative elaborate stories is amazing. Just take a look at a couple of 3 or 4 year olds and how they create amazing stories when they are playing in a fantasy world. As we grow into adulthood, our brains are continually trying to make sense of what’s happening in our lives through a narrative or an internal story. Whether we realize it or not we are continually reflecting on our past events and trying to assign a meaning to them. It’s completely human that we are doing this, and when we become conscious of this we can start to understand where these stories are coming from.
So it’s not so much the past events that shape our stories and beliefs that we have today as much as it is the way in which we have interpreted or assigned a meaning to, or even a greater story surrounding those events.
We are the stories we tell ourselves
We are the person we create ourselves to be in those stories
The power of storytelling and visual storytelling is so great that we can watch movies and scenes and we have trouble separating that from actual reality.
So if that is true, then we can create a story that serves us so well, then the stories we tell ourselves are extremely important to our success and our happiness. Let's work on changing them for the better.
