The USA is fielding a younger team than usual with half of them making their Ryder Cup debut at Whistling Straits. While victory is the goal, these rookies would do well to remember the example set by another Ryder Cup rookie back in 1969.

On the final day, in the final match, in his first Ryder Cup, Jack Nicklaus sank a four-foot putt on the 18th hole to ensure at worst a tie in his match. This meant the USA was guaranteed a tie and would retain the cup. Nicklaus’s opponent, Tony Jacklin, had a short putt of his own. If Tony missed, Nicklaus would win the match, and team USA would win outright.
