The Story Behind The Song "Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder

Listen Later

For this weeks story behind the song Claire Beck picked an absolute cracker as always! We had to talk about Stevie Wonder as he embarks upon his tour and will be coming to Dublin in July AND we had tickets for one lucky winner!
"Higher Ground" is a funk song written by Stevie Wonder which first appeared on his 1973 album Innervisions. He is  said to have wrote and recorded the song in in a very short period of time in a create flow back in May 1973.
Shortly after this Stevie was in a terrible car accident and was taken to hospital where he was an serious condition and in a coma.
Stevie`s tour manager road manager sang the song's melody into the Stevie`s ear; “Gonna keep on tryin' til I reach my highest ground.” he then noticed Stevie moving his fingers in time to the song —and performing keyboard movements on the hospital bed.
Thankfully Stevie recovered, but still carries the scar on his head and partially lost his sense of smell and taste.
He felt like he had a second chance at life.
"What happened to me was a very, very critical thing, and I was really supposed to die," he said. When plastic surgery was suggested to remove the mark left by the crash, he said "I will leave it as one of the scars of life I went through."
