Mario's Sunday Roast

The Story Behind The Song ( OF THE DECADE!) "Take Me To Church" By Hozier

Listen Later

Joining Mario for today`s Story Behind The Song was comedian Fred Cooke who took a look at some of the stand out songs of the decade. When it was all whittled down - it was an Irish man who stood out, Andrew Hozier Byrne AKA Hozier who exploded on the music scene in 2013 with his debut single "Take Me To Church"
The song was released as his debut single in 2013 as a free download. Hozier was not a well known musician at the time and the song was written and recorded in the attic of his parents home in Bray Co. Wicklow.  Lyrically this is an incredibly powerful song - is one large metaphor comparing a lover to religion. Only two musicians feature on the track: Hozier and drummer Fiachra Kinder.
The video directed by Brendan Canty and Conal Thomson looks at a relationship between two men and the opposition they faced from homophobic violence. The video quickly began to go viral and struck a chord with many as it showed a reality that still existed for people who chose an non conformist sexual preference.
The song reached number 1. on the Irish iTunes singles chart and number 2. in the official Irish singles chart and went on to become 2014's most-streamed track globally on Spotify. The song was streamed over 87 million times during the year on the service.
