The story of Joseph is one of the most powerful examples of how life can take unexpected turns—and how those turns can still lead to something greater.
Joseph was a young man, just seventeen years old, when his life began to change. He was loved deeply by his father, and that love was easy to see. But what felt like a blessing to Joseph became a source of jealousy among his brothers. Over time, their jealousy grew into anger.
One day, that anger turned into action.
Joseph’s brothers took him far from home, threw him into a pit, and then sold him to travelers heading to Egypt. In a single moment, Joseph went from being a favored son to a servant in a foreign land.
It would have been easy for Joseph to give up. Everything familiar was gone. His family was gone. His future was uncertain.
But Joseph remained faithful.
In Egypt, he worked hard and gained the trust of his master. Everything he did succeeded. But just as things were improving, he was falsely accused and thrown into prison. Once again, his life took a sudden and painful turn.
Still, Joseph did not give up.
Even in prison, he stayed faithful. He continued to do what was right, even when no one seemed to notice. For a long time, nothing changed. It felt like he had been forgotten.
But at the right time, everything shifted.
Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, had troubling dreams that no one could explain. Joseph was called from prison to interpret them. With God’s help, he explained that Egypt would experience years of abundance followed by a severe famine.
Because of Joseph’s wisdom, Pharaoh placed him in charge of the entire land.
The same man who had once been thrown into a pit was now second in command over Egypt.
Years later, during the famine, Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt seeking food. They stood before him, not knowing who he was. The moment that once caused so much pain had come full circle.
Joseph had the power to punish them.
Instead, he chose forgiveness.
He told them, “What you meant for evil, God meant for good.” In that moment, Joseph revealed a powerful truth—God had been working all along, even through the hardest parts of his life.
The story of Joseph reminds us that setbacks are not the end. Even when life feels unfair or uncertain, there is a greater purpose unfolding. What looks like a pit today may be preparing you for a palace tomorrow.
