Mary Day was abused by her stepfather, William Houle. One night, after a brutal beating, Mary was never seen again. Her siblings were told never to speak of her and there was a spot in the backyard where the kids were never allowed to go near. Decades later, a woman emerged claiming to be Mary. Detectives were so skeptical of her story, they dubbed her "Phoenix Mary".
