The Stranger is being directed by writer and producer Danny Brocklehurst, who was the showrunner on the previous series. While Coben's novel is set in New Jersey, the setting of the story has been moved to England. The English title of the book has been changed and is no longer called Stranger, but Smith's version is called Outsider.
The Stranger shuffles through its eight scenes with different plot strands, and this is where his best minutes come in. Hannah (John Kamen) is pretty creepy as a stranger who looks like he's blowing up several lives in a small town because he knows a secret somehow.
The Stranger focuses on a vast web of secrets and lies, and over the course of the eight episodes, we learn how each is interconnected.
The stranger who approaches her best friend Heidi (Jennifer Saunders), who is just about to - and plays into a job as a prostitute. Jennifer is approached by her ex-boyfriend who reveals she was involved in an escort website called Findyoursugarbaby.com. Then, a bit accidentally, she is also told a shameful family secret, about the death of her father.
I also believe that "The Stranger" works best as a pure mystery character; the more we learn about her, the less interesting she becomes. The idea of a mysterious woman coming to town and revealing secrets through blackmail for almost any reason is an interesting premise, though hard to justify.
The main crime drama is Under The Radar, brilliantly played by actor Lawrence Bucher.
