Somewhere along the Pacific Crest Trail, a solo hiker found himself far from anyone—or so he thought. Out of the treeline stepped an old man: tall, wiry, with shock-white hair and a hollow stare. He asked, almost too softly, “Are you alone out here?”

The hiker lied, saying he was traveling with a group. But the man only smiled and began following, matching his every step as the path narrowed. Then came the stories—of bogs so deep they could swallow a person whole, of hikers who vanished without a sound. Finally, the stranger whispered, “This is the stretch where they all go quiet.”
