The Struggle Cast: The Matanuska Colony the New Deal Resettlement in Alaska
The Matanuska Colony was part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal plan to help move the United States out of the Great Depression. It was one of many rural rehabilitation colonies to be established by the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA). In 1935 impoverished farmers from the upper midwest arrived in the last frontier to start over and pave the way for settlement of the then Territory of Alaska.
