What made the experience of listening to The Surfacing the most enjoyable?
Enjoyable may not be the best word to describe the expeience. More like fascinating, moving, intriguing and sometimes harrowing. The writing vividly describes the expedition to find Sir John Franklin's expedition who was lost looking for way through the N.W. Passage and the compelling story of the characters who become ice-bound there..
What other book might you compare The Surfacing to and why?
I've never read any thing to compare with this. I felt a similar reaction to "Lord of the Flies" when I read that many years ago but this was more realistic.
What does Chris MacDonnell bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
This narrator has a great voice and doesn't over-play the emotional experiences the characters are going through. He allows the writing to be the star of the work and tells it in a way that made me feel it was spontaneous and I was hearing the writers voice as he told the story. I'll certainly look out for more from him.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
In the frozen, tortuous Arctic wastes... the will to live and love are all there is.
Any additional comments?
The writing is poetic but at times, blunt and to the point. The story is fascinating. The human spirit and ability to survive through the toughest, coldest, most inhospitable and bleakest of environments is a large part of the story. The ability to find and understand love and the human condition in this sitution is another. Terrific writing and great narration.
