Another Home Run by Millard
This is the first non Zombie book I have read by the author of the Dead series. I want to be the first to say that Millard proves himself to be a writer in the genre to contend with. Here we have a novel that takes place in our world, not one over run by zombies, and the horror here is very real. It comes out of nowhere, like the ever elusive rapture, and strikes many without warning. Once the cloud clears life is never the same. Emily and her mother are the first of the Susceptibles we meet. The story then follows with a few members of a rock band that are struck mid concert. Others two are struck simultaneously and the reader is left asking why? What is the reason? What has happened? Why has it not struck everyone? The answers to these questions the reader is left with upon reading the opening chapter are soon revealed in stunning detail. Clues to their past are revealed as the truths are uncovered. The characters come to life as we find out about their past, their present and wonder about an uncertain future and why these people were chosen, why these people woke up from their blissfully ignorant lives and became susceptible. The truths are all revealed in stunning detail and one is left wondering, what if I became "susceptible?"
If your aren't and Zombie fan, first of all why not?, but love the genre, you need to pick up this book. It works as a genre novel but also a novel of the bonds of family and friendship through adverse odds. The author has also written the Dead series which includes, Dead West, Dead Cell, and Dead Frost.
