The Sustained Violent Attack That Ended Ruth Williams' Life (UK - 2020)

On 28 March 2020, 70-year-old Anthony Williams of Cwmbran, Wales, strangled his 67-year-old wife Ruth to death.

The following February, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the ground of diminished responsibility and was acquitted of murder. Ruth Williams died due to pressure to the neck and had three fractured bones Ruth was found slumped on the porch of her home in the Hollybush area of Cwmbran.

Anthony Williams was found not guilty of murder in a unanimous verdict. The following February, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the ground of diminished responsibility and was acquitted of murder. His defence argued that he acted due to his mental state, which had been worsened due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lord Justice Bean, sitting with Mrs Justice Farbey and judge Paul Sloan QC, described the killing as a “very atypical” case of homicide, and dismissed the AGO’s application. His five years sentence was not extended.

The starting point for a manslaughter sentence is between one and seven years, rising to life imprisonment at maximum.

Due to the sustained nature of the attack, he would have faced seven-and-a-half years, but this was reduced to five years due to his guilty plea.

As all prisoners in England and Wales are released at the halfway point of their sentence, he will be released in two-and-a-half years, less the eleven months he had already spent on remand.
