The Talk about Depression and Perseverance

Listen Later

This is a difficult topic to talk about and why it took me awhile to get the process of releasing this episode.
I want to be informed and helpful, not something that can just be generalized because talking suicide should be important.
I also want to apologize if anything I say is not correct and if you’re dealing with suicidal thoughts, please seek professional help or contact the suicide prevention hotline at 1-800-273-8255. They can go further in helping you with persevering depression than I can.
Depression is difficult to understand for anyone who doesn’t have it. It’s not as easy as ‘just be happier because others have it worse than you’. Or ‘anyone who has it needs to man up’.
People we thought were happy like Robin Williams and Chris Cornell surprisingly weren’t. Despite their choice, it left a lot of people wondering why? Why do extremely successful and beloved people want to end it all?
Depression plays a lot in your emotions. The definition is the feelings of severe despondency and dejection.
Like when we fall in love, we’re not in the correct state of mind in reality. Love is blind and like depression is irrational and difficult to justify actions that surround it.
It’s important to know that happiness is still within reach though. Situational depression is really common as I’ve dealt with it as well.
A lot of those times are just in high school or a job that affects your personal well being. I strongly disliked high school. I couldn’t connect with class principles and my classmates all had different values.and interests.
I felt stuck.
And the length of high school feels so much longer than it is. Upon graduation was when I felt I could be content about who I was and the people I was with.
If you’re like me, it’s cliche to say it gets better, but it does and worth it.
Music was a huge part in dealing with all that and it might as well. Connecting with emotions of what you’re feeling helps out. I’m a big fun of the grunge genre not only from being Seattle area, but their raw emotions and metaphors helps me know other people deal with it too.
Things like this subside. But some others are going to require action if you’re dealing with it at work or someone in your life. It can be hard if it’s someone that you need like a parent in which case see how you can distance yourself from it.
No one is really alone
One thing that I didn’t do much was talk to your friends and family about my situational depression. Looking back I should have and I really do believe that it would greatly.
I remember when one of my close friends came back in my area from a trip to Spain with friends and told me about his suicide attempt.
It was a surreal moment because he talks about what he was doing and posting photos on Facebook looking like he was having a great time. But the thing is, we only show what we want and hide our true feelings.
That’s where depression is scary because it’s generally silent and only really seen either in actions or when the person reveals it.
My friend is still here and he’s doing better. Social media never says the whole story. No one but maybe close friends of the famous people for saw a suicide attempt.
Catch 22 - Depression needs action
It can be difficult that we all have to create our own meaning in life as that’s what makes the average person get out of bed, but people with depression aren’t the average.
Our actions is what makes our lives and in effort to gain meaning. Making a wellness box can really help with why getting out of bed matters. Caring for pets, friends, and families.
Put everything that reminds you them or anything that makes you smile. Remember it every day.
Not just your mental and emotional health, but your physical health. Eating and working out really does help as you feel more energized and thus able to take action easier.
Depression is a weight, but it also makes you stronger. There’s people, there’s options, and anyone can survive. Don’t Quit.
