Episode 143: There doesn’t seem to be a definite answer to the question ‘Is stuttering a disability?’. Some stutterers don’t like identifying their speech impediment as a disability while others don’t mind. Join me on a trip to downtown Toronto for the 9th Annual Simply People Disability Celebration Event where I ask people with ‘officially recognized’ disabilities what they think of the term ‘disability’.
I learn a lot about other ‘invisible disabilities’ at the event and that nobody should be ashamed to have a disability. After all, we all have more abilities than disabilites. We just do things a bit differently.
The problem is society is not set up for someone in a wheelchair, someone with low vision, hard of hearing, etc.
Producing this episode also gave me the opportunity that the term ‘disability’ is the best of the worst words until a better one comes up. Until then, “Accessibility is everyone’s responsibility”.
