If God’s law is to love one another radically, then the various forms of exile and dehumanization practised by human beings through the ages may constitute a kind of ‘cultural sin’, a deviation we keep coming back to over and over as a species because it feels good. Not only might this practice lead us further from love, and not only might it not even work to give us justice, but it might also inflict a moral injury upon all of us.
