In the autumn of 2019, I was house-sitting for a retired couple on Helmsley Road in Grandville, a small town where every house has a story and every story has a locked door. The owners told me to never open the attic. That was the first rule. The second rule was to ignore any sounds from above. But on the third night, something started scratching at the attic hatch — not animal, not wind. I climbed up to check, and what I found changed the way I understand sound itself. This is an episode about echoes that shouldn't exist, about a room where the past refuses to fade, and about the moment I learned that some things listen back. No neat answers.
