Most of our fears have to do with loss: what we have lost in the past or
what we might lose in the future. Whether it is the loss of life or of
something or someone we hold precious, this fear can be powerful in
driving our choices and emotions. Many people are threatened by Jesus.
They think He will take away something precious to them – maybe even
costing them more than they can bear. When we feel like this, we plot to
remove Him or His influence from our lives. However, God is able to use
even our rebellion and rejection to His good purpose. We’ll see the
religious leaders (and their boss) reacting like this to Jesus. And
we’ll see what the apostle John has to say about what God was going to
accomplish through their plans. Unfortunately, they never benefit from
what God does through them. How will we respond to Jesus’ work? Will we
miss out on what He can do because we treat Him like a threat?
