God's Kingdom is established through the sacrifice of Christ. Notice the difference between what John heard and saw. John heard that the one who can open the scroll was the lion of Judah, the root of David (O.T. military language, c.f. Rev 5:5) but instead when he turned and looked saw a lamb who looked as if he has been slain. It is the death of Christ that defeated/overcame evil.
