Apprentices Jasper and Willow are tasked with inspecting the wiring conduit leading to the main Spruce in the town square, forcing them to enter the maintenance tunnels near the Old Boiler Room. Jasper relies on outdated schematics while Willow intuition suggests they need a non-conductive buffer. They search for discarded Grotto Packing Sponges, an insulating material used near the Grotto Assembly Area. Deep in the tunnel, they encounter a junction box failure. A piece of Grotto Seal material, which should act as a dampener, is instead vibrating violently and amplifying the energy drain, causing localized failure. They realize the seal is reacting to the wrong acoustic frequency. A single, pure chime note cuts through the noise, which Jasper recognizes as the stabilizing tone required to neutralize the seal, but the tone is too weak to overcome the localized feedback loop centered on the town's main stabilization plate beneath the floor. Their situation is complicated when they hear someone else approaching the tunnel entrance quickly.
