Asunta Yong Fang Basterra Porto was born in China in 2001 and adopted by Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra, a wealthy, well-educated couple from Galicia, Spain. On paper, Asunta had everything—a privileged upbringing, private schools, music lessons, you name it. Her parents doted on her, at least in public. But behind closed doors, things weren’t as perfect as they seemed.
