Ayesha McGowan wants to become the first female African American professional road cyclist. As a beginner getting into the sport she fell for racing hard, but it didn’t take long for her to realize that very few bike racers looked like her. She decided to change that. When she announced—after racing just eight months—her ambitious target, she experienced a mix of reactions. Bicycling magazine’s senior editor Gloria Liu talks to Ayesha about her rise as an athlete, her commitment to diversifying her sport, and how she deals with pressure, setbacks, and a crazy busy schedule.
