Forty miles from the nearest road, he discovers a perfect clearing—wildflowers, a babbling creek, ancient pines standing guard. But Charlie notices something wrong with one of the trees. A massive pine at the meadow's edge, its branches reaching in shapes that seem almost... deliberate. He marks it with orange spray paint—a habit from his search-and-rescue days. One hundred yards from his tent. Easy to measure. Easy to track.

By morning, it's seventy yards away.

By the next evening, fifty.

And by the time Charlie understands what's hunting him, it's already standing beside his tent, dark sap dripping from its bark—sap that smells like copper and burns like venom.
