Far too many self-styled 'spiritual seekers,' have an altogether insufficient understanding of the Path. Even in the world of esotericism, there are a great many misconceptions around 'receiving initiations.' Most do not comprehend what initiations are, who they are for, and what they decidedly are NOT: ceremonies whereby we mortal vessels are welcomed with open arms to the sounds of heralding trumpets into The Halls of Amenti.
But even the most jaded and cynical of atheists, who know nothing of the Path, and do not believe in any supernatural oversight of their existence, know that in life we are constantly faced with what can only be described as tests, trials, and ordeals. What's more, even a secular academic knows that there cannot be any genuine progress or learning unless the student's knowledge and proficiency is EXAMined. As below, so above. These worldly analogs have their corollaries in the supernal worlds. And we were given many other analogs and allegories of this fact, perhaps the best known being The 12 Trials of Hercules.
"All that may be well and good," we hear you say, "but how do we APPLY ALL THIS TO OUR LIVES? What is the nature of these 'tests?' How do we know when we're being tested? What significance do they have for me? I mean, I am making progress, right? RIGHT!? So what do I care?"
