In ancient Israel, kings came from the tribe of Judah, and priests from the tribe of Levi. Melchizedek, who existed before both, symbolizes the eternal priesthood that God promises. Earlier references in Hebrews confirm Jesus’ superior role compared to Levitical priests, whose authority was based on lineage under the Mosaic law (Numbers 3:5–10). In contrast, Jesus’ priesthood is founded on His “indestructible life,” which the following verses will further explain as the true plan for humanity’s salvation.
