In a world that prefers the false security of violent and coercive power, Jesus invites us to the true security of his vulnerable love. Luke 13:31-35 depicts Jesus responding to the death threat issued by Herod with an invitation to come underneath his wings as a mother hen shelters her chicks. The Gospels present a choice between two kings, Herod, the Fox, who rules by means of coercive and violent power, or Jesus, the Mother Hen, who shelters us with his vulnerable love.
