4 COMMON MYTHS ABOUT GOD
“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32
Myth 1: God is unreasonable
“God is not the author of confusion but of peace…” 1Corinthians 14:33a
“…the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Genesis 2:16-17
“Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?’” Genesis 3:1
Truth: God is a compassionate Father
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. John 1:17
Take delight in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant
nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in
God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 1 Timothy 6:17
Since God did not spare even His own Son but gave Him up for us all, won’t God, who gave us Christ, also give us everything else? Romans 8:32 (NLT)
Myth 2: God is unreliable
“We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but He did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”
“You will not certainly die…, 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:2-5
Truth: God is a consistent Father
God is not human, that He should lie, not a human being, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill? Numbers 23:19:
The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; 23they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23
Myth 3: God is unconcerned
Truth: God is a caring Father
“You can buy two sparrows for only a copper coin, yet not even one sparrow falls from its nest without the knowledge of your Father. Aren’t you worth much more to God than many sparrows? 30–31 So don’t worry. For your Father cares deeply about even the smallest detail of your life.” Matthew 10:29-31(Msg)
“If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him,
and we will come to him and make our home with him.” John 14:23
Myth 4: God is Unpleasable
Truth: God’s a gracious Father
“…because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7in order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of His grace, expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—9not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:4-9
