The Tunguska Event. The Day the Sky Exploded

Listen Later

The Tunguska event is one of history’s most mysterious and dramatic explosions. It occurred on June 30, 1908, near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in a remote region of Siberia, Russia. The event involved a massive explosion that flattened around 800 square miles (2,000 square kilometers) of forest, destroying over 80 million trees. Despite the immense energy released, roughly equivalent to 10-15 megatons of TNT (about 1,000 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima), no impact crater was ever found, and there were no confirmed human casualties due to the area’s sparse population.
